MkIII & MkIV Marines arrive. A bit on base progress...

Well today has been a good day after receiving my first delivery of Heresy marines!

With this being my first experience of resin miniatures I must say that I am very impressed. The detail on them is outstanding. Goes a little way to soften the blow when you consider the price of the dam things.

Given this is my first time working with resin I did of course have the joy of washing them in warm soapy water. I am even now a little anxious that I have not scrubbed them enough to hold my base coat even after going over them twice!

While these were driying in my kitchen I started work on my bases. Taking inspiration from Jim I started hacking at some spare bits and pieces that I had in my bits box. I am very happy with them so far and I think with the addition of some small basing slate to fill the gaps I think they will do just fine.

I will hopefully have my first 10 Legion Tactical Marines ready for paint at some point tomorrow. I will keep you posted...

While the enemies of the Emperor still draw breath, there can be no peace.

MONTH ONE TROOPS CHOICE: IMPERIAL FIST 405th Retribution Fleet

It begins and for my first month i have gone for Terminators. I know Terminator as Troops how come well if you look in the Betrayal rule book and you choose a Legion Praetor with the Pride of the Legion Rite of War this enables you to take Veteran Tactical squad and Terminator squad as Troops.

So for my First month i went for -
Terminator Squad - Cataphractii Terminator armour, Reaper Autocannon, Chainfists x2,
Powerfits x2, Combi Bolters x2, Grenade Harness

I must now apologise these models have been staring at me since Xmas and i got carried away and forgot to take Picture until i had basecoated and shaded them but here they are

How i painted these
They were undercoated with black spray followed by several thin coats of Averland Sunset to get a smooth finish 2 washes of Seraphim Sepia allowing the first to dry before applying the second. I then got Averland Sunset and painted back over the armour leaving the wash in the recesses.

I haven't decided what to do next to either leave it as a mustardy yellow or to brighten it up
Please feel free to leave some feedback.

Without the Emperor, there is nothing .......
And we would have no purpose

I have been looking forward to this for awhile ever since we came up with the idea. A group of good friends collecting and gaming together.

My Legion of choice is the Imperial Fists the Emperors own bodyguards the defenders of Terra.

I'm going to base my force on the rescue fleet that was sent to Istavan V to rescue the loyalists.

I've knew what my first month purchase was since Xmas as i recieved them from my kids as a present Cataphractii Terminators and upgrade packs and they have been sat on my painting desk waiting to be started.

First Month purchases

Cataphractii Terminators

Cataphractii special weapons set

Cataphractii Power fist set

Pictures will follow soon

Month One Troops Choice: 7th Company, Third Claw

So, it begins! I have started out with a solid troops choice, 10 Legion Tactical Marines and their Rhino transport. I've gone with a powerfist on the sarge as i always like a little something that can deal with dreadnoughts or other vehicles in combat, or threaten any characters that come too close with a taste of instant death!

I've gone for mkIV armour in the majority for my force as it looks smart, and reasonably streamlined which suits the Night Lords style. Plus the assault marines look ace!

Currently the Legion symbol shoulder pads are blu-tacked in place. I had thought about moulding my own Night Lords pads from a metal chaos one, but the quality isnt great, so i'll keep them smooth for now until Forge World (eventually....) release some nice sculpted ones.

So, without further ado, i introduce the Third Claw of 7th Company, VIII Legion Astartes.

Some poor unfortunate soul has 'donated' his hand to the Rhino
 Trophies and terror markings:

 And now to get painting!!

‎"So.... it has begin! Let us fall from the skies, with a vengeance, and purge these traitors, with flame!"

Well its the New Year, me and 3 other friends are going to start the journey in Horus Hersey over the next 12 months.

The side i have chosen are the Salamanders! Reason for choosing them, is due to there willing of fighting on, even though it is hope less, and getting up close and personal to use there flamer to purge the unclean and traitors to the true! emperor.

When Forge World released Betrayal Part 1 one had to get it straight away, so will be looking forward to the future releases that Forge World got hold which will be exciting!

For my First January purchase:

5 Mk VI Corvus Armour.
Salamander Shoulder Pads.

Idea of the force will be focusing around Armoured Spearhead, the sheer thought of having loads of tanks, just diving into the thick of battle.

The Sons of Horus Emerge

Well its almost the New Year and I am really looking forward to starting this adventure over the next 12 months.

My weapon of choice is the Sons of Horus. I love the sheer brutality of the legion, striking with overwhelming force, tearing out the heart of the enemy in an initial assault or landing the final crushing blow. The small matter of being led by the Warmaster himself of course held some interest!

I have always been a huge fan of the Horus Heresy books and always wondered what it would be like to fight tabletop battles which included the devastating weaponry long forgotten in the 41st Millenium or the all conquering Primarchs themselves. I have also always had a fondness for the Space Marines in general so with the release of Betrayal from Forge World and an array of amazing miniatures this really was a no brainer for me.

I really cannot wait to see what new releases emerge in throughout 2013 but rest assured my wallet will surely be taking a significant hit over the coming year.

Here's my January purchase:

5 MkIII Tactical Marines
5 MkIV Tactical Marines
Tigrus Pattern Bolters
MkIV Special Weapons Set
MkIV Command Set

I want to focus my force around the Istvaan III atrocity so reasonably early in the Heresy saga. Therefore my troops will be made up of an assortment of the older armour varients with the excpetion of MkII as its a bit too early for my liking and probably more in keeping with the Legion when they were the Luna Wolves.

I was going to buy some resin bases to help speed the build process but I think I may well follow suit with Jim's approach and make them myself. I have plenty of spare bases and bits to experiment with.

Hopefully will have some pics of the start of my first squad by start of next week. (depends when my new toys arrive from FW!)

A new age has begun...

Welcome to the Blog! Anybody involved with the Games Workshop hobby should be aware that Forge World have recently released the first in a series of campaign books set during the Horus Heresy. As a fan of the Horus Heresy novels, i already have a reasonably large Raven Guard army, and after a couple of friends had an idea to start a month by month 'tale of X gamers' style army during 2013, i eagerly agreed! We have also ensured we have 2 players on each side, so we know each game should be nicely balanced.

Currently our forces stand at:

For the Emperor:

  • Rob - Imperial Fists
  • Dave - Salamanders

For the Warmaster:

  • Alex - Sons of Horus
  • Jim - Night Lords

We are inputting a structure to ensure we all build armies of a similar size at the same speed

Jan: Troops
Feb: HQ
March: Elites/Heavy/Fast
April: Troops
May: Elites/Heavy/Fast
June: HQ/Troops

I have started off making some bases for my first 10 Tactical Marines. The style we are going for is Urban/Snow, so i think these will fit nicely with a little sand to fill the bigger gaps.

So, thats about it for now, tomorrow i hope to be able to post my first unit built and ready to start painting on January 1st when we get things rolling!
